The Warmth of Other Suns

Isabel Wilkerson · National Book Critics Circle Award Winner

I picked up this book and I haven't been able to put it down. Wilkerson tells the story of the Great Migration — the decades-long movement of Black Americans from the Jim Crow South to the cities of the North and West. She follows three individuals whose stories represent millions more, and she does it with the precision of a journalist and the heart of a storyteller.

What strikes me most is how personal it feels. These aren't just historical figures — they're people who made impossible choices in search of something better. As someone who grew up in poverty and found my way out through an unexpected door, I understand that kind of longing. The courage it takes to leave what you know for what you hope is out there.

I'm not finished yet — but I already know this one is going on my permanent favorites list.

A Distant Grief

A Distant Grief

Explores the rise of Idi Amin and his diabolical mind being used by the forces of the underworld. A powerful reminder to Non-third world Christians of the principalities and powers loosed in our sophisticated society.

You Welcomed Me

You Welcomed Me

Kent Annan

The most relevant book of our time. Written by a gentleman who has spent years between Haiti and regions of the world that have been "forgotten" — Kent addresses this controversial issue with the Christian Church in mind. It isn't an easy read depending on the political aisle you find yourself in. But no matter where you stand, this book convicts all of us to do much more.

Love Like You've Never Been Hurt

Jentezen Franklin

It is a hard read. Let me repeat. It. Is. A. Hard. Read. Lower your guards, give the gift of forgiveness, let go. It pains me to even write this because I like counting wrongs. But the Lord's way is a higher calling. A mountain I'm not prepared to climb — but one He calls me to nonetheless.

Hillbilly Elegy

J.D. Vance

A memoir that truly resonates with me and my personal story. Vance describes a culture that America is unfamiliar with — the white working poor. This book is sobering and entertaining. I truly believe it helped explain the deep cultural divides that shaped our recent political landscape.

Written by the co-founder of Haiti Partners, this is a thoughtful approach to seeing the world, God's people, and His love for them through the eyes of someone who has learned to grow in compassion for the hurting. While a heavy read, this book ministers to those who have felt a certain brokenness while living out their faith.

The Other Wes Moore

The Other Wes Moore

Wes Moore

An autobiographical sketch of a highly successful young man who grew up in Baltimore, who learns of another young man with the same name — who is serving life in prison. I love this book because I believe the fate of these two gentlemen could have been the same, if not for the choices they made. A powerful meditation on paths, privilege, and purpose.

My go-to book on marriage. I have used it in marriage counseling for newlyweds and have referred to it often for my own spiritual renewal. It gets at the root of all failed marriages — unforgiveness. Highly recommended for newlyweds, young couples, and marriages in crisis.
